The Alexander Local School District (ALSD) is located in the rolling hills of beautiful southeastern Ohio.  The district consists of two buildings located on one campus across from Lake Snowden outside of the city of Albany.  Alexander Elementary serves about 740 students in grades Preschool through Grade 5 and Alexander Junior / Senior High School serves about 780 students in Grade 6 through Grade 12.  Total enrollment is approximately 1,520 students.

The school district includes all of Alexander, Lee, and Lodi townships, most of Waterloo Township as well as a small portion of west-central Athens Township in Athens County. Columbia Township in northwestern Meigs County and a small portion of far eastern Knox Township in Vinton County. The ALSD also includes the communities of Albany, New Marshfield, and Shade.  It encompasses approximately 169 square miles. Daily transportation involves routing 31 buses throughout the district.

A professional staff of approximately 130 teachers and administrators are dedicated to providing the students of Alexander with a quality educational experience. The average years of experience of our teaching staff is 13 and 72% have master's degrees or training beyond a bachelor's degree. The student/teacher ratio in grades K-6 is one teacher to about 1 to 20-24 students. Professional development is considered an important component of continued teacher education and learning time is scheduled into the school calendar.

Alexander High School is accredited by AdvancED and provides outstanding college preparatory, vocational, and general courses of study.  AHS is affiliated with the Tri-County Career Center located in Nelsonville, Ohio which provides vocational programs and Tech Prep courses.

Alexander Junior / Senior High School is ranked 228th within Ohio. Students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement® course work and exams. The AP® participation rate at Alexander Jr. / Sr. High School is 18 percent.  The graduation rate for Alexander High School 96% for the 4-year cohort and 98% for the 5-year cohort.  About 53% of the 2013 graduating class entered college within two years.

Alexander Junior Senior High School and Alexander Elementary engage in school improvement efforts for continually advancing student growth and achievement.  The secondary school participates in the High School That Works program with focus groups that meet on a monthly basis.  Alexander Elementary implements the Ohio Improvement Process with the Building Leadership Team and Teacher Based Team meetings.

The Alexander Local School District supports student achievement through College Credit Plus, technology, and a variety of outstanding and supportive programs such as Talented and Gifted services, Kids on Campus afterschool and summer school programs, the Alexander Digital Academy, Bassett House –Health Recovery Services, Dual Enrollment options, and many other clubs and programs.

Alexander is proud to collaborate with a number of community agencies and organizations that operate in Athens County and Southeastern Ohio.  These partnerships include Holzer clinic, Health Recovery Services, Hopewell Health Center, Live Healthy Appalachia, Ohio University Kids on Campus and Patton College of Education, Athens County Children’s Services, Athens County Sheriff’s Office – DARE, Lion’s Club, and many other programs.
