Welcome Back 2023-24
Mark Rice

Hello Spartans!
I am quite excited to get the school year started because a lot of good work is happening at Alexander.
One of our most important changes is that this year we have added another preschool classroom. I have
learned that over the past several years we have a long list of preschoolers on a waiting list to attend
our preschool program. That is going to change this year. Don’t underestimate the value of the learning
that takes place in preschool. It is an important time in child development, and kiddos who come from
strong preschool programs get off to a great start in school. There is ample research which says a strong
start in school significantly impacts overall student achievement.

We are also at the beginning stage of significant changes to our reading instructional strategies. We
have adopted the Science of Reading and will immediately begin building the capacity of our staff for
this change. If you have looked over our school calendar you notice multiple days of professional
development have been scheduled. These professional development days are vital to our staff for
learning how and why to implement the Science of Reading strategies. Additionally, we are hosting a
district Literacy Committee. This committee is open for participation by our community members and
parents. Look for meeting details to be shared soon.

If you have been paying attention to our stadium, I am sure that you have watched all of the work being
performed on our track and field. We are behind schedule, but regardless of the completion date I am
sure that our students and community will be proud of the finished product. All through this project we
have run into unforeseen obstacles: surface stability, the field playing surface, concession stand
modifications and the weather. These obstacles have cost us time, but the finished product will be
worth the wait.

I’m looking forward to fall. Let’s have a great year!
Sincerely,

William Hampton
