Third Grade Reading Guarantee (TGRG)

In the State of Ohio, third grade students are expected to achieve a certain reading mastery before being promoted to fourth grade. The Ohio Department of Education (ODE) sets these requirements each year based on the Ohio State English Language Arts test that every student must take beginning in the fall of their third grade year. For the 2019-2020 school year, the Third Grade Reading Guarantee promotion score is 683. Any student who scores 683 or higher on the English Language Arts scaled score will be eligible for promotion at the end of the year. A student who scores 700 or higher on the English Language Arts scaled score is performing proficiently.

If your student did not achieve a score of 683 or higher on the Fall Test, they will not be promoted to fourth grade UNLESS…

  • They scored a 46 or higher on the reading subscore of the Grade 3 English Language Arts Test

OR

  • They achieve a score of 683 or higher on the Grade 3 English Language Arts Spring test

OR

  • They achieve a passing score on an alternate test given by the district
