Playground Art

Since the opening of the new school, the students have had to look at 2 ugly ventilation pipes just off from the playground.  Thanks to students from Mr. Richie’s art class, those pipes have been transformed into art.  As you can see from the pictures, we now have a giraffe and an elephant adorning our area.  Alexander Elementary thanks Mr. Richie, Hannah Morgan, and Amber Mendenhall.

3rd Grade Animal Projects

Mrs. Doubrava’s third graders are finishing up a project that they did with their animal unit.  The students researched and wrote reports about an animal of their choice.  They also made dioramas of the animal’s habitat to better understand where their animal lives.  We incorporated computer class into this project by creating PowerPoint presentations to share with the class.  The students loved showing their hard work to classmates on the SMART board, and we learned a lot about many different types of animals and where they live!

Native American Presentation

The fourth grade welcomed the Muskingum River Valley Nation of Native Americans representing nine tribes.  The Native Americans demonstrated dances and the students got to do the dances.  They explained their regalia (what they were wearing).  They brought furs, jewelry, pipes, drums, and regalia to share with the students.  A question and answer session was also given to clarify facts about Native Americans.

Young Artists

John Kearns, kindergarten, and Jakobe Gillette, 1st grade, were chosen as
exhibitors for the 28th annual YOUNG PEOPLE’S ART EXHIBITION, sponsored by the
Ohio Art Education Association (OAEA) and held at the Rhodes State Office Tower in
Columbus, March 1st to March 30th, 2008.

Only 170 pieces of art work were selected from the nine OAEA regions in Ohio for this
show. It is a distinct honor for a student to have art work in this exhibition. The art work was submitted by Ms. Anne Roberts.

Their art work will also be displayed at the Ohio Department of Education
building in Columbus during the summer of 2008.

2nd Graders Learn Spanish

Mrs. McLean’s second graders are learning Spanish!  Roger, a student from Ohio University, is teaching the children colors and emotions.  The children really enjoy the lessons he teaches.

Allison, another Ohio University student, has started a mini unit on plants.  The children drew pictures of plants and labeled their parts.  They will decorate pots, plant seeds and monitor the plants’ growth.  She plans to have the children create costumes and perform a small play.

Resident Artist Visits Classes

A Residency Artist from Parkersburg, West Virginia, Ms. Debra Conner,
will be visiting Mrs. Meeks' Language Arts' classes Feb. 25 - 29.  Ms.
Conner, a writer and performer, will be working with the students on
writing poetry and book making.  She is hoping to show students that
even humble ideas can be made into poetry and that by teaching
students book making, they can celebrate and preserve their creative
thoughts.  Mrs. Meeks would like to thank Ms. Conner and the Dairy
Barn for making this opportunity possible
