Welcome

Welcome to Mrs. McLean's Web Page

I have a very exciting year planned!  My goal is to make sure your child learns a lot and is ready for third grade, but still has a great time!

My web site will contain information for you to read, including spelling lists, class newsletters, calendars and more.  I hope you will use this page and find it to be valuable!  Please drop me an email or call me if you have suggestions for this page.

Mission Statement

Our mission statement:

We will be top notch kids as we learn and grow!

Classroom Rules

CLASSROOM RULES

We had a class meeting and the children created these three classroom rules:

1.     We will keep our hands, feet and objects to ourselves.

2.     We will respect others, their property and our environment.

3.     We will always do our very best work.

That pretty much covers it, don't you think?

Spelling Words

SPELLING LIST

Spelling Words

Test: May 9th

calves  halves  shelves  wolves  lives

 leaves  road   young  ceiling  neither

Remember! The best way to learn spelling words is to read and write them. Have your child write them 3 times each, look them up in a dictionary, make flashcards or use the words in sentences. Encourage him or her to say the word before writing it. (Dates of tests may change!)

NEW:  On Tuesday your child will take a pre-test.  If he or she gets all 10 words correct, a challenge list will be sent home to study.  Those who learn all 10 challenge words will receive 10 tickets.  Those who learn 9 will get 9 tickets and so on...

About Mrs. McLean

Who is this person who is spending

so much time with my child?

My name is Lydia McLean. I grew up in Glouster and now I live in Athens with my husband and children.

I have a Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education from Ohio University.  I am currently working towards a Master's Degree in Reading.

This is my fourth year at Alexander.

In my free time, I enjoy reading, writing, exercising, traveling, remodeling and decorating my home, and spending time with my family.

Star Student

     We have a new star!

Congratulations and thank you to Jordan

for being a STAR!!

The star student will have his or her picture on a chart in the classroom with information about hobbies, family, goals and more.  Each child will have a copy of this flyer to take home.  The class will offer compliments to the star.

The star student will be allowed to bring something in to share with the class.  A special toy, a picture, a pet, etc.  Please call me the week your child is the "STAR" so that we can make arrangements.

The star student will be encouraged to send in a favorite food to share with the class.

He or she will also receive a "NO HOMEWORK" pass, a "FREE TIME" pass, a treat from the treasure chest and more.

IT's GREAT TO BE A STAR!!!!!!!

Homework

READING HOMEWORK:

Tuesday and Thursday: read the current week's story for 10 minutes and the paper phonics reader for 5 minutes.

Monday and Wednesday: read the small book for 10 minutes and the paper phonics reader for 5 minutes.

Please initial the reading calendar and place it back in the reading bag each night.

Please fill in the phonics reader journal.  The bag needs to be returned to school everyday.

SPELLING HOMEWORK:

Practice nightly as you wish, using flashcards, games, writing, etc.

MATH HOMEWORK:

Your child will typically have a math review sheet of what was covered that day in class.  He or she may also have a 2 minute fact practice test that you will need to administer and check.  Our goal is to be able to correctly compute 20/25 problems!

SOME TIPS FOR SUCCESS:

1.  Practice, practice, practice!

2.  I suggest buying or making some addition and subtraction flashcards.

3.  Ask your child to compute the facts while you are driving.

4.  Google math facts and find some good sites that offer practice.

These ideas and more will help children memorize these essential facts.

WATCH FOR THE CALENDAR EACH MONDAY. :}

Pizza Hut Book-it calendar

I hope you are remembering to log the minutes that your child reads each night on the book-it calendar.  Remember-the goal is 120 minutes this month.  Please sign the calendar and return it at the end of the month.  Your child will receive a certificate for a free personal pizza from pizza hut, a certificate and a prize from me.

THANKS!!

Wednesday Words

Wednesday Words

Your child will have a Dolch Sight Words spelling test each Wednesday.  I will randomly pull 10 sight word cards from a can and the children will write them on their test.  I will not make a list each week.  These are words that children are expected to know.  You can print the Dolch sight words from this sight and practice them all.

TICKET PROGRAM!!!!

We have started a new ticket program.  The children receive 4 tickets each morning.  They can keep them by remembering to raise their hands to speak and staying seated.  Each time a child forgets these two simple rules, he or she loses a ticket.  It has gone very well this week.  Most have managed to keep all of their tickets.  Some have cashed them in for prizes and others are saving for the "BIG TICKET" items.  We discussed both possibilities and it will be interesting to see who saves and who spends!

Ticket List:

1 ticket: Use a stuffed animal during silent reading for the week

1 ticket: piece of candy

7 tickets: treat from the treat jar

10 tickets: change desks with anyone

15 tickets: help with morning message

20 tickets: read a book to the class

30 tickets: 5 treats from the jar

40 tickets: free time pass

50 tickets: sit at the teacher’s desk for a day

60 tickets: homework pass

75 tickets:  giant chocolate bar of your choice

75 tickets:  giant chocolate bar of your choice

120 tickets: ticket to Movies 10

140 tickets: $5.00 gift card to Walmart

It’s up to you!

What do you want to save YOUR tickets for?

Green Team
