Honors English 10 Summer Reading

 Summer Reading Assignment

Alexander High School

Ms. Busch

English 10

Summer 2007

Honors students should be readers and analyzers.  Therefore, the first assignment for all Honors English 10 students is to complete the summer reading list and the corresponding assignment.

The summer reading is mandatory.  Much of the course work during the fall quarter is based on the list.  Time will not be available during the grading period for students to do the reading. Failure to supply a summer journal on the second day of class will result in a change of placement for the 2007-08 academic year. If you have any questions as you are reading or completing the assignment, please contact me by email bbusch@alexanderschools.org or by phone 698-3303.

1984 by George Orwell

Use different colored post it notes to mark the following throughout the book:

·        Mark three (3) examples of conflicts that occur in the plot – these may be internal or external conflicts.  Who or what is involved?  Why is it important?

·        Mark three (3) details about setting that are important – how does the setting affect the plot or characters? What tone is being created with these details? Is it believable?

·        Mark three (3) spots in the book that aroused your emotions – refer to three different emotions:  pity, triumph, anger, love, jealousy, fear, joy, pride, frustration, etc.  What happened? Why did it make you feel this way?

·        Mark four (4) elements (plot, character, setting, dialogue, etc.) that you believe reveal the theme.  What do you think the theme is? How do you relate to this theme personally?

  • Mark three (3) examples of irony – these may be verbal, situational, or dramatic.  What is the purpose of this irony?  What is your reaction to it?

Friday Night Lights by H.G Bissinger

While Friday Night Lights is indeed a book about football, there are many underlying issues present.  Take note of the communal (community), racial, economic, and class issues that are prevalent throughout the reading.  In a typed paper, explain each issue as it is described in Friday Night Lights.  Then explain how the same issues are shown in our community.
