Book Shares

Each student will be expected to do at least one book share before the end of May on an independent reading book that s/he has read in class.  Information can be found towards the end of this web site.  We will do Book Shares on Fridays.  Please note that there are only 2 Fridays left in May.

EXTEND Program

The following classes will be offered to EXTEND students for 2007 - 2008:

 

4th -8th EXTEND Class Description

 

 

Art Media                              Explore while creating an art project using any of a variety of media.

 

Astronomy                            A visiting astronomer and a web quest will give students the opportunity to learn the basics of astronomy.  Students will have the opportunity to view the night sky through a telescope at the astronomer’s home observatory.  This voluntary evening experience will require students to have their own transportation.                                         

 

Citizenship                           Plan and carry out a community service project.

 

Create A Culture                Students explore “outside the box” to create a unique, imaginary culture complete with holidays, celebrations, dance, food, clothing, and more. 

 

*Envirothon                          Learn about soil, wildlife, aquatics, and forestry as you prepare to compete at the district Envirothon competition.  (We may also work with the H.S. Envirothon team.)

 

Everyday Math                      Haven’t you ever wondered if there is more than one way to solve a problem? In this class, participants are challenged by trying to solve everyday problems when there is more than one way.

 

Independent Study               Choose the method of study as you explore a topic related to your area of giftedness (music, science, art, etc.)  Final creations for 4th & 5th graders will be a filamentality. For 6th through 8th graders it will be web design.

 

Literature Circle                Read, do activities, and critically discuss a literature book in a small group.

 

*Model United Nations        Represent a country, write a resolution, prepare a cultural display, and compete at the two-day Southeastern Ohio Model United Nations competition on November 29th and 30th.  In addition, students will work with Mrs. Kasler and Mrs. Redefer at arranged times during lunch or after school.  (Cost is approximately $90 for lodging, food, awards, and t-shirt.)

 

*Power of the Pen               Learn literary concepts related to creative writing. Prepare and compete in this creative writing competition. In addition, students will work with the Power of the Pen coach during lunch and after school.  The competition will take place in February.  Winners will advance.  (There will be a fee for the competition.)

 

*Science Fair                       Follow the scientific method, prepare a display, and compete at the district Science Fair.

 

Song Writing                       Students will study the basic structure of a song and create an original composition, complete with music and words.  Prerequisites:  Must be able to read and interpret music, as well as have a good understanding of chord progressions.

 

Visual Media                        Explore photography and video techniques by producing a creation of the group’s choice.

 

What’s the Verdict             Become part of a trial in this real-to-life simulation.

Homework - Grades 3 - 5 TAG Language Arts

Students should spend no more than 30 minutes on homework each evening.  If you find that homework is requiring more than 30 minutes, please let me know.

Practice Vocabulary words.  There will not be a test until the end of the unit. 

Read each evening for 10 minutes. Complete any activities not completed in class:  Literature Circle Book

Vocabulary

Students will participate in a variety of group and independent activities using vocabulary from the group reading books.  Students are responsible for knowing pronunciations, definitions, meanings, and how to use the word properly in a sentence.  A test over the weekly vocabulary will be given on Friday.

Monthly Themes

Lessons and activities will be based around a central monthly theme on a 3 year basis.  This allows students to stay in the program for 3 years without repeating any themes or any books.   This schedule is subject to change.

Individualized Approach to Spelling

We will be using the Individualized Approach to Spelling.  Each students' Spelling words will come from words they have misspelled within their writing.  New Spelling lists will come home on Friday with Spelling tests being given the following Thursday.  Self chosen Spelling activities will be a part of the weekly program.  A detailed explanation is included below in the attachment.
