First and Second Grade Reading Intervention

During our 30 minute daily intervention time, Mrs. Rhyan meets with a group of first graders and a group of second graders.  The students in these groups are identified as gifted in at least one area.  They have also met or exceeded all of the Reading First Benchmarks.

What do we do?

First of all, we have a daily drill of the Reading First skills.  The students practice blending sounds into words, word parts, high-frequency words, and fluency.

Secondly, we may do one of many other activities for the day.  These activities include participating in a Literature Circle to discuss a book being read by the group, conferencing with Mrs. Rhyan to assess fluency and comprehension in an individually chosen book, or sharing with the group what we have learned from our individual books. Some days we work on skills in our Daybooks.  These include working on strategies for reading textbooks and other nonfiction, developing vocabulary, practicing poetry analysis, practicing identification of the literary elements such as character, setting, and plot, and practicing active reading.  Active reading includes marking up the text and writing questions while reading. All of these activities are designed to help students become better readers.

When do we meet?

First Grade Reading Intervention meets from 8:30 to 9:00 everyday.

Second Grade Reading Intervention takes place in the afternoon.  We meet from 2:00 - 2:30 daily.
