ATTENDANCE

Please keep current of your child's attendance.  As you are well aware, our school has a strict attendance policy.  Student attendance is measured EACH PERIOD.  Consequently, if your child exceeds the number of allowable days in a period, your child will FAIL THE CLASS DUE TO ATTENDANCE.

Students often times do not realize that late arrivals and early departures impact attendance.  For instance, if a student checks out of school during 8th period 6 times without an approved medical, dental, or legal appointment, the student will FAIL THE CLASS.  The same is true with late arrivals.  Please be ever so cautious.

Student attendance is measured by semester, NOT BY NINE WEEKS.  Please note that the first semester ends December 20th and second semester ends May 28th.  Consequently, absences for August, September, October, November, and December will be tallied for 1st semester; whereas, absences for January, February, March, April, and May will be tallied for 2nd semester.

Also, please remember students must bring necessary documents for medical, dental, or legal appointments.  Once approved, THESE ABSENCES DO NOT AFFECT your child's attendance.  Please note EXCUSED ABSENCES, such as the notes you write when your child is ill and does not see a doctor, DO COUNT towards your child's attendance.

PLEASE FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS FOR WRITING A LETTER OF APPEAL AS LISTED IN THE STUDENT HANDBOOK IF YOU FEEL YOUR CHILD'S FAILURE DUE TO ATTENDANCE WAS IN ERROR.  THIS MUST BE COMPLETED AT ONCE.

UPDATE ON ENGLISH 10

Due to the wonderful fact that English 10 students made such progress in English 9, a slight change is in the works for their English 10 class.  AS AN EXPERIMENT, we have moved our class into Mrs. Busch's English 10 class.  We're trying this on for a few weeks to gauge comfort, strengths, weaknesses, and performance.  Mrs. Busch plans the lesson so all students are being exposed to the appropriate grade-level indicators.  As we are working this out, both Ms. Kasmer and I jump in to assist all students and to help with instruction.  I am still responsible for assessing grades and performance for my students.

The last time we did this it was quite successful.  At the end of our previous trial run, over half of the students felt confident and comfortable enough with their skills and talents to continue in Mrs. Busch's class full-time.  Please let me know your thoughts and concerns.  I know our students are ever so close to acquiring proficiency level status and I want to do all I can to make that happen.

UPDATE:  Student performance has been great.  Therefore, we will continue this approach for the 4th nine weeks.

Five students completed the ACT Special Testing during the week of April 14th.  All materials have been securely packaged and returned to ACT.  Please look for results sent directly from ACT to students' home within one month.  A sincere note of appreciation is extended to all parents who greatly assisted getting materials in by the due date.  Thank you!

CONGRATULATIONS, MR. CROW!

Our own Mr. Crow recently completed yet another academic achievement.  Please give him your good wishes on his most recent success.  Additionally, in his SPARE TIME, he is completing additional graduate level coursework at Ohio University this spring.  We're convinced he has 28 hours in his day!

A Fond Farewell and Hello Again

Ohio University student Christen Morris completed a practicum with us this winter.  We were quite fortunate to welcome someone of Ms. Morris' capabilities into our school.  (She even came in on snow days to help with IEP's!)  Although we bid farewell to Ms. Morris for this year, we are pleased to announce she'll return next school year for student teaching.  Currently she is taking classes and finishing preparations for her June wedding.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS

Come support the Track and Field Event for Special Olympics at Alexander High School's track on Friday, April 25th.  Nearly 300 athletes from several surrounding counties will compete in a variety of events.  Alexander's band starts the day in parade formation. Students from Leo Club, FCCLA, FFA, NHS, and from Mrs. Baker, Mrs. Burns, Ms. Braverman, Ms. Clary, Mrs. Bolin, Mr. Crow, and Mrs. Harkins' classes will be present in the press box, behind the concession stand, and on the field helping the event run smoothly.  Lunch will be provided for Alexander volunteers.  Students should dress comfortably and in layers as we have exerienced all types of weather.  We look forward to hosting the event.  Come help us cheer on the athletes!

ANNUAL REVIEWS

Annual reviews are scheduled throughout April and early May.  As you will notice in your invitations, an initial date was listed.  Please contact us if that day will not work and together we will find one that will.  It is always a pleasure to see you.  Thank you, too, for the opportunity to teach your child.  We realize in that you can select a school of your choice.  Thank you for selecting Alexander.
