What's Happening in Our Classroom

Most of the children have been real good about returning their homework each day.  They will continue to bring two math sheets every day, Monday through Thursday.  We will only have homework on weekends if it is absolutely necessary (due to falling behind over snow days, etc.).  Please continue to sign it.  This lets me know that you have checked it and your child has corrected their mistakes.

Your child will also continue to bring their big reading book home every night, Monday through Thursday.  We usually do two selections from their big reading book each week.  They should practice reading those out loud to an adult in addition to practicing on their own, each evening, selection 1 on Monday and Tuesday, selection 2 on Wednesday and Thursday.  Your child should also be bringing home little paperback readers in a plastic bag almost every night.   It is very important that they return these every day so they can read them and go on to the next book.  They will bring home their phonics readers on Friday to practice.  These are the ones that I asked them to keep in a shoebox or zipper bag.  It helps for them to go back periodically and reread these to stay familiar with the vocabulary.  A few of the children say that they have lost some of these, so I am sending home duplicates of the ones that we have already read.

We will continue to have spelling pre-tests on Monday and the spelling test on Friday.  If your child spells all of the words correctly on Monday, they are excused from the test on Friday.  We are now taking another spelling test on Wednesday.  These are their “Wednesday words”.  These words are drawn from a canister of “Dolch sight words”.  These are the 222 most commonly read words.  These are the words that they will be reading more often and should be spelling correctly in their writing.
