Skills for Academic Success

Attendance Matters

Regular school attendance is critical to your  school success. Being in school and on time means not missing anything. This is important for school success. You can take a proactive approach to attending school on a regular basis.

· Get up and out of the house on time.

· Prepare clothes, supplies, backpacks, and lunches the

       night before school.

· Set a regular bedtime at a reasonable hour.

· Don’t try to squeeze in too much before school. Just

       wash, dress, eat, and go.

Study Skills

Study skills are often overlooked.  However, they are some of the most essential skills that you need in order to achieve academic success. In order to help improve your study skills;

· Study in an environment that feels comfortable and does not have any distractions.

· It is important to be calm and patient while reviewing the material.

· Take good notes (and pay attention in class). *If you do not know how to take good notes, ask!

· Develop effective memorization methods. *Again, if you need help, ask!

· Focus on the areas that need the most attention.

· Work with others. *On reading assignments  or other assignments that  teachers allow group work, collaborate with peers.

· Develop crucial essay writing skills through practice.

Stop Bullying Now

What is bullying?
Bullying is when someone keeps doing or saying things to have power over another person.
Examples of Bullying include;

· calling names,

· saying or writing nasty things about another person

· leaving others out of activities

· Purposely ignoring others

· threatening others

· making others feel uncomfortable or scared,

· taking or damaging others kids things

· hitting or kicking others

· making others do things they don't want to do.

Why do some people bully?
There are a lot of reasons why some people bully, including;

· a way of being popular,

· making themselves look tough and in charge.

· in order to get attention or things

· to make other people afraid of them

· jealousy of the person they are bullying

· being bullied themselves.

Some bullies may not even understand how wrong their behavior is and how it makes the person being bullied feel.

Why is bullying harmful?
Some people think bullying is just part of growing up and a way for young people to learn to stick up for themselves. But bullying can make young people feel lonely, unhappy and frightened. It makes them feel unsafe and think there must be something wrong with them. They lose confidence and may not want to go to school any more. It may make them sick.

What can you do if you are being bullied?
Coping with bullying can be difficult, but remember, you are not the problem, the bully is. You have a right to feel safe and secure.
Talk to someone about the bullying. You do not have to deal with it alone. Your School Counselor is available to talk to you whenever you feel like talking. Remember, it is not tattling when you tell your School Counselor or a teacher if a person is being harmful.

What can you do if you see someone else being bullied?
If you see someone else being bullied you should always try to stop it. If you do nothing, you're saying that bullying is okay with you. If the situation is potentially violent, get an adult and do not intervene. Remember, it is not tattling when you tell your School Counselor or a teacher if a person is being harmful.

"I can't tell you how to grieve, for I am not you. But I can tell you that strength comes from release and compassion comes from companionship. I can't tell you what you'll find at the end, but I can go with you along the way."

Sleep

Be sure to get around 8 hours of sleep every night. Whenever you do not get the  sleep you need, you are too exhausted the next day to participate effectively in school, which can lead to poor grades.

Nutrition

Choosing healthy foods, and drinking plenty of water will help to improve life success.

· Drink eight 8 ounce glasses of water each day.

· Eat vegetables and fruits. (This can be done creatively by adding fat free dip options. Fat Free Ranch for vegetables or a Fat Free yogurt for fruit)

· Eat only whole grains. (Not all whole grain foods are dry and flavorless. Shop around!)

Exercise

Walking for just 30 minutes a day can help to improve your mind and body. If you are unable to walk, be sure to find alternatives such as lifting weights, swimming with assistance, or

stretching.

Body Image

Everyone has a different body type. No  two people are alike. We all come in different shapes and sizes. The important thing to remember is Health, Nutrition, and Fitness. It you can maintain a healthy life, you will feel good about yourself.

Be proud of yourself.
